Invasive weed removal began this week on Lake Opechee. The City of Laconia, in cooperation with the Lake Opechee Preservation Association (LOPA), has contracted with Aqualogic of Gilford, NH, for ten days of Diver-Assisted Suction Harvesting (DASH) to remove non-native invasive weeds such as variable milfoil and water violet from the lake. Their efforts will be focused on the areas with the highest concentrations of invasives as designated by the NH DES.

Funding for the weed removal is provided through a grant from NH DES (50%), and these funds are matched by the City of Laconia (25%) and LOPA (25%)

According to Grey Draper, City of Laconia Conservation Technician, the role of groups such as LOPA is significant. "LOPA is a valuable organization to the community and to the City when it comes to maintaining and improving Lake Opechee’s aquatic health because the members are experts on their water body. LOPA is a great resource that protects the water and shoreline and educates the public regarding Lake Opechee."

Contributions made to LOPA go directly towards funding invasive species removal and water quality monitoring. LOPA is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
