4th of July Boat Parade
This year's 4th of July LOPA Boat Parade was a smashing success! Over 2 dozen boats participated in our slow loop around the lake--our best turnout yet. And the fabulous weather didn't hurt either! It was great to see all our Opechee neighbors cheering us along from the shore. Thanks to the LOPA volunteer organizers for making this annual tradition happen.

Loon Chicks on Opechee
Our loon couple, tentatively named Opie and Chee, have once again produced offspring on Opechee! Last year, for the first time in recent years, Opie and Chee raised a single chick on the lake. This spring, the Loon Preservation Committee (LPC) again set up a nesting raft in the north end of the lake, and again, our local love birds produced. This time, TWO chicks! One chick seemed to have had a bit of navigational trouble early on and was found wandering alone on the lake by

4th of July Boat Parade
Decorate your watercraft in red, white, and blue, pile in the kids, and join us for a ceremonial lap around the lake in honor of our country’s 250th birthday! Meeting at the north end of the lake, we will make a counterclockwise slow lap around Lake Opechee with horns and whistles to the cheers of the crowd on the shore. All are welcome to join! If it rains and the fireworks are delayed, the boat parade will be rescheduled to the same date as the rescheduled fireworks! Take

They're Back!
The loons that successfully nested at the north end of Opechee last year have returned! Photo by Laura Norton. The loons, still in need of names (Opie and Chee?), have been sighted by at least a couple of onlookers on and around the nesting platform placed by the Loon Preservation Committee. Many will recall that last year the couple produced the first baby chick thought to be born on Opechee in many years. Will they produce a chick or two again this year? One way we can all

Ice is Out!
Afternoon temperatures in the low 40°s and a steady breeze were enough to open the channel and clear the north end of the lake - we're declaring "Ice Out" for 2025! There are still some icebergs floating around, but it's clear that a kayaker could make the definitive trip up the lake. See our Ice page for more details! Ice Out marks the beginning of another year of summer activities on the lake. The water is still cold, but we're already seeing some docks and watercraft bein

New Hampshire May Experience Winter Fish Kills as Ice Melts
Concord, NH – Fish kills, where large numbers of fish die in a short period of time, are not an uncommon occurrence in the early spring. As the ice recedes, especially from many smaller Granite State waterbodies, there may be dead fish, and most of these occurrences are due to natural processes. Ponds that are shallow, particularly those with relatively high levels of nutrients and aquatic plants, are generally more susceptible. Dead fish may become visible under the ice duri

Winter on the Waters
Photo by Cindi Cote As winter deepens across the Northeast, the lakes that define our region’s landscape are transitioning from open water to frozen surfaces. Ice on lakes brings opportunities—from skating and ice fishing to simply enjoying winter’s beauty—along with serious safety considerations. This year’s early cold snaps have accelerated ice formation, prompting local observers and outdoor enthusiasts to pay careful attention to conditions. Opechee Lake Ice-In: December
