They're Back!

The loons that successfully nested at the north end of Opechee last year have returned!

The loons, still in need of names (Opie and Chee?), have been sighted by at least a couple of onlookers on and around the nesting platform placed by the Loon Preservation Committee. Many will recall that last year the couple produced the first baby chick thought to be born on Opechee in many years. Will they produce a chick or two again this year?

One way we can all help to encourage them is to keep our distance. Remaining at least 200 feet from their nest can help reduce their stress and promote successful nesting. Binoculars and zoom lenses are great ways to overcome the separation without disturbing the happy couple. As excited as we all are that they're back, please give them plenty of space!

Join us in welcoming back the loons - but only from afar, please.
